History of the WTA US Open Women's Singles Tournament
The inaugural US Open, then known as the US National Championships, was first held in 1881. However, it wasn’t until 1887 that the first US Women’s National Singles Championship was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The first women’s singles champion was Ellen Hansell, a 17-year-old from Philadelphia.
Until 1918, the tournament used a challenge system, which meant that the defending champion would automatically qualify for the final. After 1922, a seeded draw was introduced to ensure that top players would meet in the later rounds.
From 1968, the tournament accepted both professional and amateur players, and in 1973, it became the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money to men’s and women’s players.
The 70s also saw the tournament surface change from grass to clay and then to hardcourt as the US Open moved to the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. In 2006, the complex was renamed after Billie Jean King, a 4-time US Open singles champion and one of the pioneers of women’s tennis.
