Roulette Games - Play Best Roulette Online

Roulette is a classic casino game that is one of the most popular games on Stake's online casino.

Stake Casino provides a wide array of online Roulette games that you can play right now, as well as other table games to provide an immersive casino experience for the savvy gambler.

In addition to the exciting action at the roulette wheel, Stake.com offers a wide variety of popular casino games such as online slot machines, card games, live casino, baccarat, blackjack, Pachinko, poker, and many more for the dedicated Stake Casino bettor.

What is Roulette?

One of the most well-known casino games throughout history, Roulette is a rich and storied game featuring high payouts and an incredible variety of betting options. Stake features many different versions of roulette in our casino, which provides options for bankroll and risk management. The ideal place for players wishing to spin the roulette wheel, get lucky and hit it big!

The aim of the game is to bet on where you think the ball will land once the virtual roulette wheel stops spinning. Bet correctly and you can walk away a winner. There are also exciting side bets available on the roulette table, which we’ll explain on this page.

Though a simple-looking game of chance involving spinning a wheel, Roulette has sophisticated betting systems within the gameplay to allow a strong betting progression for bankroll management and to suit any style of player.

The advantage of playing roulette online vs classic roulette games at brick-and-mortar casinos is the low house edge to minimise losses, a variety of roulette games from different providers, as well as the different winning combinations that help you plan your betting strategy to build your bankroll and win big.

History of Roulette

There are many imaginative stories about the origins of roulette. Many believe that it was first invented in the 17th century by a French mathematician known as Blaise Pascal. Others believe it was a French monk or even the Chinese who first created this exciting game of chance.

In reality, it appears that roulette was created in the early 18th century in France. It was inspired by games like Hoca and Portique. It was called roulette for the first time in 1716 in Bordeaux. After being tweaked to match the times and location, it took on the familiar layout and wheel we know today in 1790.

Types of Roulette Games & Popular Roulette on Stake

Stake is proud to provide a wide range of Roulette games from a large list of providers to suit the way casino players wish to play and wager on the betting table. Each game will have slightly different rules, gameplay, and payouts.

To prove just how much we love roulette, there’s a Stake Originals Roulette game available where you can play this exciting casino game from any of your favourite devices. You can also play our exclusive games: Stake Roulette by OneTouch and Roulette Live by Pragmatic Play.

Live Roulette vs First Person Roulette

Playing live casino games is a great way to get a land-based casino experience while playing from the comfort of your home. That means you’ll have access to live casino roulette without having to get dressed up or travel to a physical casino location.

Live dealer roulette also provides all of the action, thrills, and bright lights of real casino play, with the addition of getting to chat to other players and interact with the live croupier. Some of the best live roulette games include Evolution Gaming's classic Roulette Lobby and Lightning Roulette. Learn more about how to play live dealer games to guide your strategy further.

First Person Roulette, created by Evolution Gaming, is a great way to experience the same live games without having to deal with any extra flash or interaction. Instead, you can play the same games but on your own. These games determine the outcome by using RNG technology.

We recommend trying First Person Roulette and First Person Lightning Roulette for the full experience.

European Roulette, American Roulette & French Roulette

There are subtle differences between the European, French, and American versions of roulette.

American roulette has both a 00 and 0 on the wheel. This pushes the house edge up and lowers your chances of winning. For this reason, it is not as popular as other forms of roulette.

French roulette has a single zero and also uses the La Partage or En Prison rule. This reduces the house edge, as you can see when playing French Roulette by Pragmatic Play.

European roulette has a single zero and offers a balanced version of the game for everyone to enjoy. You can try your hand at live European versions at Stake by playing games like Live Immersive Roulette by Evolution and Lucky 6 Roulette by Pragmatic Play.

Other Roulette Games on Stake.com

Live roulette games that combine game show mechanics with standard roulette gameplay have become some of the most popular titles around. These games offer extra ways to win via the bonus features they offer, often thanks to the addition of extra bets and wheels of fortune.

You can explore popular roulette game shows for yourself by loading up Gold Vault Roulette, Red Door Roulette, XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, or Triton Multiplier Roulette. Other great options include Lightning Roulette, Power Up Roulette, Live Mega Roulette, and Royal Riches Roulette.

For those who want to play in a language other than English, there’s also a range of titles available. We recommend checking out Mega Roulette - Brazilian, Turkish Roulette, Hindi Roulette, and Japanese Roulette.

With so many versions of the classic casino table game of Roulette available in our casino game library, players have no shortage of options to play their favourite game!

How to Play Roulette Games

Roulette is a classic table game of chance with simple rules where the player spins a wheel numbered 0-36 and places bets on where the ball lands within the wheel.

Each number on the roulette wheel is divided into two colours, Red and Black, with each number assigned to a colour based on placement on the board.

  • Numbers 1 - 10, 19-28: Odd numbers are Red, Even numbers are Black

  • Numbers 11-18, 29-36: Odd numbers are Black, Even numbers are Red

The single zero is separate, coloured green, and only available to bet on as an individual option. Some variations (American Roulette) also include a double zero, which increases the house edge of the game.

Each number slot is called a 'pocket' and the pocket placement on the roulette wheel mixes the numbers up in the layout of the roulette wheel, depending on the version of roulette (i.e. American vs European).

Bet Types

The ways to bet on roulette are based on how these pockets are grouped, and the payouts are based on how likely the ball will land in a particular pocket group. The following is a guide to the betting options in roulette, which may vary based on the specific roulette game you play.

The types of roulette bets available are broken down into 'outside bets' and 'inside bets'.

Outside Bets group pockets into large groups, offering the best chance for payouts at a typically lower payout ratio. The ways to place an outside bet on roulette online are:

  • Column: A roulette wheel is organised into three columns of 12 numbers each. This betting type divides the wheel into thirds based on the position of the wheel and has a payout of 2:1.

  • Dozens: Divides pockets based on numbers group by the dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36). Similar to columns, this divides the spinning wheel into thirds and has a payout of 2:1.

  • Even/Odd: The simple betting format in which the bettor bets whether or not the ball will land on either an odd or even number.

  • Black/Red: In addition to Even/Odd betting, players can also bet on the colour of the pocket the ball lands in after a spin of the roulette wheel. Much like Even/Odd, the payout is even odds, 1:1, as there are an equal number of red pockets as black pockets.

  • Low/High: A simple even/odds bet in which the player can bet on whether the number is low (1-18) or high (19-26). An even odds bet that has a payout of 1:1.

Inside bets are a narrower group of bets that have less frequent, but larger, payouts.

  • Single-Number Bet/Straight Bet: The betting type with the highest payout of 35:1, this type of bet is very simplistic. The player bets on the specific individual number they think the ball will land on.

  • Split: Betting on two adjacent numbers on the roulette wheel, this bet has a high payout of 17:1

  • Street: A street bet is a bet that the player makes for a row of 3 numbers, with a payout of 11:1

  • Corner: A corner bet (also known as a 'square' or 'quarter' bet) is a type of bet where you bet on the 'corner' that joins 4 numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 5), with a payout of 8:1.

  • Basket: The basket bet, only available in American Roulette, is a specific bet on 5 specific numbers in roulette - 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. A simple bet with fixed values, the payout for this is 6:1.

  • Six Line Bet aka Double Street: The Six line bet allows the bettor to place a bet on two lines, which is why this is also called 'Double Street', where six total numbers are selected from two adjoining rows. This bet has a payout of 5:1.

Roulette Strategies & Tips to Win

While playing at a virtual roulette table is all about luck and chance, there are strategies and betting systems in place that can help you manage your budget and boost your chances of winning. Of course, there’s no way to guarantee where the spin of the roulette wheel will land, but smart strategies can make a difference.

One of the most popular roulette gameplay strategies is known as the Labouchere betting system. Find out more about this system and how you may like to adopt it in our guide. You may also want to check out any of these popular betting system guides on our blog:
